Delegates of Christian Democratic Union/Christian Social Union (CDU/CSU) and Free Democratic Party (FDP) met for a first round of exploratory talks at the CDU party headquarters, in Berlin on Sunday.

Party delegates could be seen leaving the venue after holding negotiations about possible coalitions a week after the federal elections took place.

The general secretaries of the three parties gave a first press statement in the evening. The discussions were conducted in an atmosphere of 'great personal trust' according to CDU General Secretary Paul Ziemiak, who sees ‘many intersections in terms of content’ between the two parties. FDP General Secretary Volker Wissing spoke of a 'constructive conversation' after the first preliminary explorations with the CDU / CSU, in which there were 'few cliffs.'

The exploratory talks with the CDU/CSU were the second round of coalition negotiations for the FDP, who met with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) earlier on Sunday. Even though the SPD won more seats than the CDU, both parties still need to enter a coalition to form a government.
