Owners of damaged shops and cafes in Germany's western resort of Bad Munstereifel, who had lost their businesses in devastating floods last July, were allowed to open their stalls in the city's annual Christmas market, as seen on Thursday.

While many of the traditional fairs have to close down throughout the country due to the rising number of new COVID-19 cases, Bad Munstereifel restaurateurs and artists were allowed to offer their goods in the small wooden kiosks around the collegiate church of St Chrysanthus and Daria under 2G rule, which grants access only to the visitors, who are vaccinated or have recovered from a Coronavirus infection.

Bad Munstereifel, a cosy city with half-timbered houses on the banks of Erft river southwest of Cologne, was devastated by the floods caused by torrential rains in July 2021. The states of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) were worst hit by the heavy rainstorms which had caused rivers to burst their banks.
