A group of activists held a rally to commemorate what would have been Tamir Rice's 19th birthday, in Washington DC on Friday.

Crowds could be heard singing 'Happy Birthday' as well as chanting 'Justice for Tamir,' as they held balloons with the number 19 written on them.

Later, the activists marched to the Department of Justice to demand the reopening of the investigation into Rice's killing.

"I remember that we have been protesting as youth. At that time I was young person. We were protesting around Michael Brown and then to hear the news about another one (...) And I just want to say for today we are here to demand that not one more," said one speaker at the rally.

Tamir Rice was killed aged 12 by Cleveland police in 2015 after a replica toy gun was mistaken for a pistol.

In December 2020, the Department of Justice under the presidency of Donald Trump closed the investigation into Rice's death, just a month before the end of Trump's presidency.

The boy's mother Samaria Rice, with the support of the coalition called Tamir's Campaign for Justice, is pressuring the Biden administration to reopen a federal investigation into his death.
