Thousands of revellers gathered for the Rio Carnival street party at Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.

Footage shows people dressed up dancing along to live music during the colourful carnival celebrations that have returned to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Rio de Janeiro's carnival is different because Rio has a special energy that you can't find anywhere else, it's completely different. You can enjoy your carnival in a way that nobody cares. You can be comfortable with your friends, but of course, you need to be careful. This energy, you will not find anywhere else," said Vitoria, a participant.

Rio de Janeiro's iconic carnival officially began on Friday, February 17, and will continue until February 25.

Another participant named Amanda commented: "Rio's Carnival is so much fun, there are a lot of people from many different places, you meet lots of people, different types of people. In a normal day you would not interact with them. During carnival it's all different and you find everybody, that's what I like the most. There are many places, many street parties, lots of whatever you like. You are in Rio it's chaos but a beautiful chaos."

Brazil's federal government reportedly expects around 46 million people to join the festivities this year in the world's biggest carnival.
