Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen on Sunday offered Beijing help to deal with its COVID-19 surge.

"As long as there is a need, based on the position of humanitarian care, we are willing to provide the necessary assistance to help more people get out of the pandemic and have a healthy and safe new year," Tsai said during her New Year address delivered at the presidential office in Taipei on Sunday.

In light of present tensions between China and Taiwan, the president also appealed 'to the Beijing authorities' for 'peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait'.

China is currently in the midst of a COVID-19 crisis following an abrupt U-turn on many of its 'zero-Covid' policies.
