The leader of a cross-party Canadian delegation paid tribute to Taiwan’s support for Ukraine, during a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on Tuesday.

"Taiwan’s response to Russia’s full-scale invasion to Ukraine with millions of dollars of donation and over a hundred tonnes of humanitarian aid was sent to Ukraine," said Chair of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group Judy Sgro.

"One of my assistants fled Ukraine in spring and came to Canada. And we stay very connected to the issue. We thank you so very much for standing strong and again being a beacon of hope to so many," she continued.

The delegation arrived in the country on Sunday, while President Tsai Ing-wen also commended Canada for its support in the ongoing tensions with China.

"In August, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of National Defense and Minister of International Trade, expressed deep concern over China’s military exercises," she said. "Soon later in September, the Canadian vessels conducted freedom of navigation operation in the Taiwan Strait and actions that serves to uphold the regional stability and peace."

Beijing has accused Western countries, particularly the US, of interfering in its affairs. It rejects any parallels between the Russia-Ukraine conflict and Taiwan separatism, arguing that the former is between two sovereign nations and the latter an internal issue.

China regards Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One-China' principle, and held a series of drills following the visit to Taipei of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August.

In the past few months, numerous delegations from the US and the EU have visiting Taiwan. The Canadian trip is the first since the COVID-19 pandemic and coincided with Taiwan’s 111th National Day celebrations.
