Berliners came to pay their respects to former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev at the city hall on Friday, where a condolence book was placed.

Some residents voiced their opinions about the politician.

"Among those old men, this was such a brave step that this man dared to take against the dynamics in his own country in order to give the world new opportunities to develop. Although not everything ran according to what he had in mind - and he was not an allrounder after all - but I think that he was one of the bravest people of our time and I regret it very much [Gorbachev's death]," Barbara, one of the visitors shared.

Gudrung from Hamburg said her attendance at the event was an 'urgent necessity to express gratitude'.

"Embodiment of freedom, and courage, and what he had to endure after that, and what he gave us... it is.. you can see - it all comes out. So much gratitude," the woman added.

Another Berliner Anke believes Gorbachev and his wife Raisa 'were the first and the only ones that tried to do something for the people and for freedom and to take a step towards democracy, which the majority there [Russia] doesn't even need.'

"As a result, we have this tragic situation today. And frankly, I am happy for Raisa and Mikhail that they don't have to witness how this issue will progress. But they have accomplished the greatest merit for humanity." she concluded.

Gorbachev passed away on Tuesday at the age of 91.

He implemented several reforms aimed at liberalising the economy and public life after becoming the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. During his time in office, he saw the fall of the Berlin Wall, brought the Cold War to an end, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.

He resigned at the end of 1991, triggering the break-up of the Soviet Union.
