Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev paid the official visit to the United Kingdom on April 5-7, 1989, on his way back to Moscow from Havana.

Archive footage features Gorbachev and his wife, Raisa, arriving at London Heathrow Airport. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, her husband Denis, as well as other officials can be seen welcoming the Soviet delegation.

During his 3-day visit, which turned out to be the last state visit to the UK for Gorbachev in his career, he had talks with Thatcher, visited a royal residence at Windsor, attended dinner given in his honour, as well as stopped by for a brief talk with Londoners gathered to greet the Soviet leader.

According to Gorbachev's memoirs, the British prime minister stated that 'the West welcomes perestroika and wishes it a success', adding, however, that she was worried about the 'haste of reforms.'

Following the talks, Gorbachev and Thatcher can be seen taking part in the signing ceremony of mutual agreements by foreign ministers of the two countries, Eduard Shevardnadze and Geoffrey Howe.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
