Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said that the case of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini who died in the custody of the morality police is 'under investigation,' speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.

"The death of this woman [Mahsa Amini] must surely be investigated to see if there is a party at fault or not. I contacted her family at the first possible time and assured them that we will follow up on this issue. No matter if communities outside Iran announce their stance, preserving all residents' rights is what we recognise it as the inherent duty of the Islamic Republic," Raisi said.

Mahsa Amini's death has sparked protests across Iran, after the police have described her death as an "unfortunate incident", protesters claim Mahsa was beaten up during her apprehension, causing her to suffer from a concussion and later brain death.

"Protests and protesters are heard. However, there must be a difference between protest and disturbance. Naturally, no one accepts disturbance and chaos," Raisi noted.

The Iranian leader also touched on the issue of reviving the nuclear deal saying that the 'ball is now inside the US's ground.'

"If they want to be committed to this agreement seriously, they should officially announce that and show it through action that they are committed to this agreement. If so, we will welcome a fair and good agreement that the Islamic Republic can benefit economically," Raisi concluded.

Tehran insists that its nuclear programme is for peaceful energy purposes.
