٠٠:٠٢:١٢Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said that the government is giving the judiciary a "priority" in the allocation of resources as Hong Kong is facing an "unprecedented" number of arrests and prosecutions, when speaking at a press conference at the Central Government Complex in Hong Kong on Tuesday.
"We are facing some unprecedented challenges in dealing with a large number of people being arrested and probably also the large number of prosecutions being made, which will then be taken to the court," said Lam.
She expressed gratitude to the judiciary "for devising various means at various levels of courts to try to speed up the court cases," because she said "we all want justice to be done effectively."
The Hong Kong chief executive then noted that the judiciary has not been denied any additional resources "for many years," adding that "we will continue to do so, especially under these very special circumstances."
On Monday, Hong Kong Chief Justice Geoffrey Ma Tao-li announced that a task force has been set up to look into "how best and how expeditiously" courts can cope with an increased number of cases brought about by the ongoing anti-government protests, including such measures as the extension of sitting hours.
