"If House Speaker Pelosi visits Taiwan, China will certainly take resolute response and effective counter-measures to safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said. "As for what the measures are, if she dares to go, let's wait and see,” he continued.
Pelosi’s officially itinerary for her current tour of Asia does not include the island but the Chinese authorities are concerned that her plane could make an unscheduled stop.
“We would like to warn the US side once again that the Chinese side is getting ready," said Lijian. "The Chinese People's Liberation Army will never sit idly by.”
Taiwan has never officially declared independence from China. Beijing considers the territory as part of the country under the One-China policy. The US maintains strong ties with the island, selling weapons to Taipei and backing its attempt for sovereignty.
