Archive footage filmed on 7 November 1920 shows the world-famous mass theatrical performance, 'The Storming of the Winter Palace', on Uritsky Square, Petrograd (now Palace Square, St Petersburg).
It marked the three-year anniversary of the October Revolution, when Lenin’s Bolsheviks took control from the provisional government, which had come to power following the overthrow of Tsar Nicholas II.
According to historical records, thousands of people participated in the performance, in front of over 100,000 spectators.
Two stages were constructed on the square. The actions of the provisional government and the bourgeoisie were portrayed in a satirical manner on the 'white' stage, while preparations for the revolution took place on the 'red' one.
The action then moved directly onto the square itself, where 'revolutionary soldiers' carried out the assault on the Winter Palace.
This performance is believed to be one of the largest in history. The theatrical spectacle became part of Soviet folklore, although the real events were far less dramatic.
