"In the face of the US acting recklessly in disregard of China's solemn representations, the countermeasure by China will be justified and necessary," said Hua Chunying. "We pay close attention to Pelosi's itinerary. If the US insists on going its own way, China will take firm and grave measures to safeguard China's sovereignty, security and interests."
Pelosi’s current trip to Asia doesn’t officially include a stop in Taipei, but it has been expected since she cancelled a visit in April, following a positive COVID-19 test.
Taiwanese and US media reported that it could go ahead as soon as Tuesday evening, after US Defence Secretary Antony Blinken stated that it was Pelosi’s 'right' to visit wherever she wanted. The foreign ministry spokesperson said the situation was far more complex.
"Secretary Blinken's remarks turned black and white, and once again profoundly demonstrated the hegemonic mentality and robbery logic of some people in the United States. That is 'I can provoke you arbitrarily, but you cannot oppose or defend yourself'“ explained the Chinese spokesperson.
Taiwan has never officially declared independence from China, while Beijing views it as part of its territory under the 'One China' policy. The US is a staunch ally of the region, selling Taipei billions of dollars in weapons.
