Brussels residents gave their reactions to the results of the recently concluded European Parliament elections which saw Belgian far-right parties make substantial gains on Monday.

Local Cedric Brunn said that he doesn’t find the far right gains “terrific”, as it can “cause some problems, because they want to close the door for the migrants.”

Another local Sien Liu expressed her fear at the results because she looks “quite foreign.” She added that she likes the European Union and hopes for it to “live on.”

Another resident, Francois Benjamin, shared a similar sentiment and said “we are really scared about the rise of the extreme right-wing that comes in a Europe, which normally should be united.”

Afshin Nabizadeh, who also lives in Brussels, was a bit more optimistic as he mentioned leftist parties such as the Belgium Workers’ Party that obtained a seat for the first time.

Centre-right New Flemish Alliance and far-right nationalist Vlaams Belang coming first and second respectively at the European elections, obtaining three seats each.
