Residents in the Syrian capital of Damascus responded to US President Donald Trump's threats of military action in the country on Wednesday after the US accused the Syrian government of being behind an alleged chemical attack in Douma last Saturday.

One man said the United States was looking for an excuse to start a conflict on Syrian territory.

"We got used to it like we got used to the war, clashes and other possible threats in the past few years," he continued. "The American threats and accusations of Syria using the chemical weapons are due to their failure and weakness. They panicked that the Syrian army won and that the Syrian people are united as one hand, resistant."

Another resident said western countries are "biting each other like rats now" while "the Syrian state is resilient and the people are steadfast."

On Saturday, the 'White Helmets' alleged that chemical-filled munitions were dropped over Douma on April 7 which led to the deaths of up to 70 people. The Russian Ministry of Defence has labelled the claims a 'fabrication.'
