North Rhine-Westphalia Minister-President and Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet called the deadly flooding in Germany a "disaster of historic dimensions" as he updated the public on the floods and the newly formed Climate Adaptation Act at a press conference in Dusseldorf, on Monday.
Twenty-three cities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia have been damaged by the flood disaster 'of historic dimensions,' taking at least 43 people's lives.
"The Chancellor herself called me from Washington yesterday and pledged the federal government's help, as did the Federal Minister of Finance, so I am counting on the federal government and the state to help make this aid possible very quickly," said Laschet.
He also mentioned the passing of the Climate Adaptation Act in the state parliament, which he described as "the first law of its kind in Germany."
"We are the first regional authority in Europe to have our own legal basis to be able to make requirements and specifications for climate adaptation everywhere in the municipalities of the state," he said.
