Jersey's Assistant Environment Minister stressed that the island was still in a 'very difficult' situation on Saturday, after the naval stand-off between the UK and France over post-Brexit fishing rights drew to a close earlier in the week.

Gregory Guida, assistant minister for the environment and home affairs, said, "We've had a system that worked for about 20 years because we were actually not part of the EU," and added, "but as part of Brexit, this system could not last," and said that a new contract would be needed.

According to Guida, communication which was once direct and speedy has turned complicated, "The contract is between the EU and the UK, so any information that the French want to give us needs to go from Normandy to Paris to Brussels to London and back to us."

Louis Jackson, the owner of a local seafood wholesaler, said, "The situation is, it's biased. Everything is in favour of the French fisherman, and nothing is in favour of the Jersey fishermen," and added "we are stuck without our pathetic 3-mile limit."

Tensions flared as military vessels from the UK and France responded to a flotilla of 100 French boats attempting to blockade the harbour in protest over problems obtaining rights to fish in UK water earlier in the week.

French fishermen claim that they are being restricted from operating in British waters due to difficulties obtaining licenses, as well as the current issue where vessels are fishing off the British channel island of Jersey must be equipped with monitoring devices that allow UK authorities to track ships.

During Brexit negotiations, fishing rights between the EU and the UK became a highly contentious issue despite the UK fishing industry representing just 0.1 percent of the country's GDP, with rights to UK waters for EU fishers post-Brexit becoming a particular sticking point
