The Conservative Party's landslide victory in the UK's general election is a positive development for Britain's departure from the EU and ensures that a disorderly Brexit is nearly "not a reality anymore," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a press conference in Brussels on Friday.

"Many were happy that there is a clear outcome and not a hung parliament again where you can neither move forward or backwards. We all regret that Great Britain is exiting the EU but we also have a certain security that this agreement, which we prepared, applies," said the chancellor.

"A disorderly exit of Great Britain from the European Union basically is not a reality anymore. This is already achieving a lot, if I remember our situation of three months ago," she added.

Merkel said there is "professional recognition" for UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for the number of voters he managed to convince to vote for the Conservative Party and its manifesto.

"It is good to have a prime minister with a strong mandate and that he can negotiate with us. And that perhaps he has the possibility to bring together Great Britain over what really divided it. I would really wish, wish him that he is able to do that. So that a country like Great Britain can be a good partner for the European Union, and we want that," Merkel added.
