US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi gave a robust response to being sanctioned by China over her Taiwan visit, while speaking in Washington DC on Wednesday.
"There's no reaction, who cares? Look, let's enlarge the issue. We're talking about, as our distinguished chairman and others have mentioned, the struggle between democracy and autocracy," she stated.
Beijing also sanctioned her Pelosi’s family, after repeated warnings of 'counter-measures' over her trip to Taipei. However, she told her audience the US would continue on the same path.
"We will not allow China to isolate Taiwan," said Pelosi. "They have kept Taiwan from participating in the World Health Organization, other things were Taiwan can make a very valued contribution. And they may keep them from going there but they're not keeping us from going to Taiwan. We will not allow them to."
China considers Taiwan part of its territory, under the 'One China' principle. The island has never officially declared independence from Beijing.
