Austrian People's Party (OVP) candidate Sebastian Kurz told journalists at the Hofburg media centre in Vienna on Sunday, that it was "an amazing day," after preliminary results of the 2019 Austrian legislative election showed that him and his party were clear winners in the snap elections.

Kurz made the remarks as he arrived at the Hofburg library for a series of TV interviews, alongside his opponents from the other parties.

According to preliminary results, Kurz's OVP won 38.4 per cent of the vote. The Social Democratic Party of Austria came in second, with 21.5 per cent, while the far-right Freedom Party of Austria picked up 17.3 per cent.

Kurz's government collapsed in May, triggering snap elections when a recording was published of then-Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache in a conversation with an unidentified woman claiming to be the niece of a Russian oligarch, discussing taking control of the country's largest-circulation tabloid in order to help the FPO in future elections. The purported deal was allegedly made in exchange for public contracts.
