French President Emmanuel Macron talked about his priorities for the G20 and G7 summits, during a joint presser with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The French President emphasised the importance of climate talks and said that it was his 'red line'. "If we do not go further in terms of our climate ambition, it means we are gathering for nothing," he said.

Macron commented on the "very strong tension between the United States and China" amid their trade war and expressed his willingness in appeasing tensions during the upcoming G20 summit, with the "modernisation of the multilateral trade framework."

Macron later answered a question from a journalist on his position towards the arrest of French businessman and former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn in Japan on April 2019, over claims of financial misconduct.

He stated that the Japanese justice is independent, but that he will be "vigilant, via our consular work, so that the rights of defence and the presumption of innocence are protected in this case."

This is Macron's first state visit to Japan since he was elected in 2017. He will stay for the duration of the G20 summit, which kicks off in Osaka on Friday.
