The crowd gathered at the Bundestag after the Fridays for Future rally that took place. Protests also took place across Germany in Hamburg, Freiburg, Cologne and Bonn just days before Sunday’s general election.
Thunberg urged the crowd to vote, but that voting alone was not enough. "Yes, we must vote, you must vote, but remember that voting only will not be enough. We must keep
going into the streets," the Swedish activist said.
“Time and time again the people in power show their true interests and priorities, and it is not an overstatement to say that they simply don’t seem to give a damn about us. We can no longer leave this to the people in power to take care of,” Thunberg stated.
Fridays for Future and a number of other climate activists successfully challenged the government's 2019 climate protection act in March 2021. Germany’s Constitutional Court found that the act did not describe in enough detail how emissions targets were to be reduced after 2030, making it in part, unconstitutional.
