George Floyd's relatives held a remembrance rally outside New York City's Brooklyn Borough Hall to commemorate George Floyd ahead of the Tuesday anniversary marking one year since his death.

Floyd supporters and relatives chanted slogans saying "Change, justice, say his name" and held signs bearing messages such as "We are the change" and "Black and proud."

George Floyd's brother Terrence Floyd led the rally and gave a speech.

"The world woke up. Finally the eyes are open to what we already knew," he said.

Floyd's brother emphasised his wish for people "to keep the movement flourishing, to keep my brother's name ringing in the ears of everyone."

"Communication is key. When people say 'defund the police,' I got family and friends who are in the police, so not all of them are wrong, not all of them are bad," he added.

"Maybe change their policies - not maybe, change their policies - retrain these officers, because if they don't know the difference between a Taser and a gun something is wrong," he concluded.

Floyd passed away on May 25, 2020 after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck during an arrest, despite Floyd saying he couldn't breathe.

Chauvin was consequently convicted of murder and manslaughter in April 2021.
