US President Joe Biden commissioned his new administration to investigate and assess the risk of domestic terrorism in the country following the US Capitol siege, announced White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki at a press briefing in Washington DC on Friday.

"The January 6 assault on the Capital and the tragic deaths and destruction that occurred underscored what we have long known: the rise of domestic violent extremism (DVE) is a serious and growing national security threat," Psaki said. "The Biden

administration will confront this threat with the necessary resources and resolve."

The official assessment will be carried out by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security, Psaki explained.

"There is important work already underway across the interagency in countering DVE and we need to understand better its current extent and whether maybe gaps to address, so we can determine the best path forward," she added.
