Although the partial lockdown had helped slow down the number coronavirus cases in Germany, Berlin painted a bleak picture of the pandemic on Friday, saying that the cases had almost doubled in retirement homes and care facilities compared to springtime.

"RKI president Wieler urgently appealed to all of us to abide by the rules for limiting the coronavirus and to reduce the contacts to a minimum. He explained in detail, why further reductions of contacts are necessary. And the Federal Chancellor shares this view," said German government spokesperson Martina Fietz during Berlin's biweekly federal press conference.

Fietz also commented on the ongoing Brexit negotiations as the prospect of a no-deal Brexit became stronger over the past days.

"The Federal Chancellor emphasised numerous times, that in her opinion a deal continues to be the best solution for both sides," Fietz said.
