European Greens Party candidates Bas Eickhout and Ska Keller have told journalists assembled outside the office of the European Parliament in Brussels on Sunday that they are hoping for a

"great result for the Greens."

Dutch MEP Bas Eickhout from the EGP urged caution as the results are "coming in, but it really looks like a great result for the Greens, at least, and I think it's very clear that voters, they demand change, they want a different Europe and I think they want a progressive, social, green Europe and that's what they voted for and that's making us very happy and we are going to make sure to fight for that."

Eickhout's German colleague Ska Keller said she was encouraged by reports of high voter turnout "because this is what democracy is about, making your own choice about your own future and not having others decide for you, so a higher turnout is absolutely great."

Exit polls predict the EGP could win more than 70 seats in the European Parliament, an improvement on the 52 seats they won five-years-ago.
