The EMERCOM press service reported that more than 700 people have been evacuated from the Stariy Gorod district in Russia's Orsk, Southern Urals, which was flooded following a breach of a protective dam, on Saturday.
Footage shows rescuers driving through flooded streets in service vehicles and helping residents get to their cars.
"Water is rapidly arriving in the old part of Orsk. This area is mainly a residential district. Russian EMERCOM employees and other rescue teams, including regional and municipal teams, are evacuating the area," head of Russian EMERCOM's Press Service for Orenburg region Aleksandr Sitnikov said.
According to the agency, more than 2,400 residential houses and more than 3,000 neighbourhood territories were flooded. Emergency workers used boats, all-terrain vehicles and high-capacity vehicles to navigate submerged city streets and evacuate residents. More than 530 experts, 125 units of equipment and 75 watercrafts were working on site.
At the time of publication, 711 people, including 210 children, have been evacuated. 242 people, including 73 children, have been transferred to temporary accommodation centres with EMERCOM psychologists working on site.
The Orsk administration's press service reported on Friday evening on the breach of a protective dam.
"The flood zone includes 4,258 houses and 10,987 people. Representatives of the administration of the Soviet district, a group of 50 rescuers who arrived in Orsk with watercraft are working on the site," the publication said.
Orsk mayor Vasily Kozupitsa announced a state of municipal emergency in the town.
