٠٠:٠٢:٠٠Foreign ministers from countries of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) observed a minute of silence in memory of Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi and foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian - after both were among those killed in a helicopter crash - during the organisation’s ministerial council meeting in Astana on Tuesday.
"They have defended interests and dedicated their lives to ensuring the welfare of the Iranian people and the development of their country. We express our deepest condolences and share the irreparable loss and grief of the Iranian people," Kazakh Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu said.
Raisi and Amir-Abdollahian were reported dead on Monday, after their US-made Bell 212 helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran's East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog on Sunday.
They were returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan. The aircraft was discovered by rescuers in the early hours of Monday, while no official cause has been reported at the time of publication.
Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.
Global leaders, including those from Russia, India, Iraq, Syria, Egypt, and other nations extended their condolences. Raisi, a conservative cleric closely associated with the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
