٠٠:٠٣:١٠St Petersburg hosted the very first BRICS International Forum on Nuclear Medicine on Thursday, offering representatives from the member states a platform to introduce their latest discoveries in the field.
Director General of Russia’s National Medical Research Radiological Centre (NMRRC) Andrei Kaprin introduced a method to treat oncological diseases.
"It is a technique that helps to deliver a radiopharmaceutical that is fatal to a tumour through peptides or proteins. Proteins are tropic and absorbed by any given tumour. […] We 'trick' the tumour because it starts to absorb this protein that it needs to feed on. And with it comes this stuff, like the Trojan Horse," he explained.
The representative of the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority, Tamer Sakr, announced the country’s plans to extend the production of chemicals and pharmaceuticals used in diagnostics and treatment of various diseases, including cancer.
"We have a good infrastructure in Egypt. We have a good reactor and most of the human resources are present. We succeeded in decreasing the price for Egyptian patients by about 50 percent," the expert said.
The BRICS Nuclear Medicine Forum will take place in St. Petersburg from June 20-21. The event brings together approximately 200 participants, including representatives of Health Ministries and related agencies, as well as leading developers and manufacturers of radiopharmaceuticals from BRICS member states.
