٠٠:٠٧:٢٧Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called a reported incident involving a 73-year-old disabled woman allegedly abandoned at the door of the Russian Embassy in Mexico City an example of 'inhumanity', during a briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.
"Did they think it was possible to put her in some kind of shelter? There's 'adoption of a child', but no 'adoption of a mother' yet. Was she supposed to be taken in or what? That's what inhumanity is," Zakharova said.
The spokesperson also said the embassy had organised a transatlantic flight to Russia for the woman.
"Let me remind you that these flights are taking place despite the decisions made by the 'collective West' to close and reduce direct air links with our country. These are the countries whose values were bought by those who left their immobile mother in the care of people they 'dislike', 'hate' and flee from," she added.
According to Russian media reports, the woman, her son and his wife all moved to Mexico in 2022, having sold property in Russia. Later, the couple moved to the US under the 'Uniting for Ukraine' refugee programme, using the younger woman's Ukrainian citizenship.
The mother's documents were reportedly not accepted, and she was allegedly left by her son at the door of the Russian Embassy in Mexico City.
The family have not been reached for comment, and so have been kept anonymous in this report, and neither the US nor Mexican governments have released a statement.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
