Russian citizens came out to vote in the presidential election in Tashkent, Uzbekistan and Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia on Sunday.

Vadim Slepakov, a Russian living in Tashkent, said he wanted to cast his vote as it was a 'difficult' time.

"It is necessary to vote, it is important, it is political participation in the life of the country. We show the younger generation that it is necessary to actively participate in the political life of the country," he said.

Footage shows voters registering to vote and depositing their ballots in ballot boxes.

"Today we decided to come here as a whole family, to vote for the president, to elect the president of the Russian Federation, because it is very important to us. No matter where we live, it is our homeland," said Natalia Milyachikhina from Uzbekistan.

Yevgeni Lyashenko, who came to the Russian Embassy in Ulaanbaatar, was voting outside Russia for the first time and called the event 'memorable'.

"I think this is a memorable event for me personally. In general, I consider myself a patriot of our huge country and I always go to the elections with great pleasure," he said.

According to the Russian Central Election Commission, at the time of publication, voter turnout in the presidential election was 70.57 percent, taking into account remote electronic voting.

Russian presidential elections abroad are being held on March 17 at 295 polling stations in 144 countries. Early voting took place in 74 polling stations in 51 countries from March 1 - 14. Three-day polling was organised in Cyprus, Thailand and South Ossetia - from March 15 to 17, in line with domestic voting across Russia.
