Residents and guests of Ashgabat gathered at the cultural and entertainment center 'Alem' for New Year's celebrations on Sunday night.

Footage shows artists dancing and singing in a decorated street, while screens broadcast Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow's New Year address.

"Today we came here to make the little ones happy. Already so many kids have come up to me with smiles on their faces. I really enjoy seeing their smiles. This is not the first time I dressed up as Father Frost. It has become a tradition for me to come here every New Year's Eve to please the children, because children are our future. I hope all your dreams will come true in the coming year," Ayaz Baba, a participant who had dressed up as Father Frost, said.

In an address published by state media, Berdimuhamedow congratulated citizens with the start of the new year and summed up the results of the outgoing year.

New Year celebrations are held in winter and spring in Turkmenistan on January 1 and on March 21, respectively. The latter is celebrated as a state holiday, ringing in spring and the start of a new year according to the solar calendar.
