Russia holds an Arria-formula meeting at the UN Security Council in New York City to discuss the 'humanitarian consequences of unilateral sanctions', with opening remarks by Russian UN Permanent Representative Vassily Nebenzia on Monday, November 25.
The meeting focuses on the socio-economic consequences of 'unilateral coercive measures' (UCMs), such as trade embargoes and financial restrictions.
According to organisers, discussions at the Security Council on Syria have seen sanctions imposed since 2011 criticised for exacerbating humanitarian crises and limiting access to food, medicine, and other essentials.
Discussions will consider the impact on civilians and humanitarian operations, and identifying strategies to strengthen co-operation and minimise risk to humanitarian workers.
