Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi told his troops to 'prepare' for a potential ground invasion of Lebanon, during a meeting with the 7th brigade in northern Israel on Wednesday.
"You hear the jets overhead; we have been striking all day. This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah. Today, Hezbollah expanded its range of fire, and later today, they will receive a very strong response. Prepare yourselves," he said.
“Your entry into those areas with force, your encounter with Hezbollah operatives, will show them what it means to face a professional, highly skilled, and battle-experienced force. You are coming in much stronger and far more experienced than they are. You will go in, destroy the enemy there, and decisively destroy their infrastructure. These are the things that will allow us to safely return the residents of the north afterwards," he added.
According to the Lebanese side, at least 51 people killed and 223 injured in Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday, with ongoing rocket fire from Hezbollah into northern Israel.
The IDF launching a military operation with airstrikes on Hezbollah locations dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows' on Monday. Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated over the past week following the mass explosions of pagers used by Hezbollah and the Israeli shelling of Beirut's southern suburb, which killed the group’s senior commander, Ibrahim Aqil, along with 60 others. Hezbollah, in response, launched a rocket attack on areas near the northern Israeli city of Haifa at dawn on Sunday.
Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023.
