During a press conference on Wednesday, Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh clarified that US forces are not involved in Israel’s recent military operations in Lebanon. She emphasised that the presence of American military officers in the region is solely for protecting US forces, stating, “I just want to lay that flat.”

Singh acknowledged the threats Israel faces but reiterated that U.S. support in the region does not extend to operational assistance in Lebanon. She stated, “We are not supporting their operations when it comes to Lebanon,” and explained that U.S. forces are positioned to protect themselves and potentially assist Israel if necessary in the event of a significant attack.

When pressed by a journalist about any form of U.S. support, including intelligence sharing, Singh firmly denied any involvement: “No support. No.”

Singh expressed concern over the escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, referring to the ongoing tit-for-tat strikes along the northern border. She highlighted the risks of miscalculation leading to a wider conflict, underscoring the importance of diplomatic resolutions to prevent an all-out war. She noted, “We still believe that there is time and space for diplomacy,” indicating the US preference for de-escalation in the region.

The backdrop to these discussions is Israel's ongoing military operation, dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows,' which has reportedly resulted in significant casualties in Lebanon, with over 609 deaths and more than 2,000 injuries according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

The conflict has intensified since the onset of hostilities following the Israel-Hamas war, with cross-border exchanges of fire continuing among Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions.
