Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East, at a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Thursday.

"The escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which has caused a wave of instability throughout the Middle East, from the Red Sea to Iraq, has led to a full-scale confrontation between Israel and Hezbollah. <...> We must immediately stop the spiral of violence before the situation gets completely out of control. We call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, preventing further bloodshed and creating conditions for the settlement process to return to a political and diplomatic track," Vershinin stressed.

The deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that only by resolving the Palestinian crisis on the basis of an international legal framework would it be possible to stop 'the looming spectre of a major war in the Middle East'.

The diplomat also offered his condolences to the families of the victims in Lebanon, following the latest Israeli airstrikes.

"We strongly condemn the large-scale military attacks and provocations against our friend Lebanon. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Vershinin added.

The IDF reported on Wednesday that 'the Hezbollah terrorist organisation fired numerous projectiles from Lebanon at northern Israel, including the towns of Safed and Nagariya'.

"Following these attacks, the Israel Air Force struck the launchers from which the projectiles were fired, as well as other terrorist targets, including Hezbollah operatives, weapons depots, operational rocket launchers and terrorist infrastructure," it stated.

The Israeli military began 'Operation Northern Arrows' on Monday, with airstrikes on Hezbollah locations. Over 600 people have been killed in total and more than 2,000 injured at time of publication, according to Lebanon. Hezbollah has also launched rocket strikes into northern Israel.

Israeli Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi told troops on Wednesday that the strikes were "both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah", hinting at a potential ground invasion.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated over the past week, following mass pager and handheld radio explosions, which Hezbollah blamed on Israel. The IDF did not comment.

Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging cross border fire since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza in October 2023.
