The star of the match, captain Megan Rapinoe not only won the Golden Ball for best player of the tournament and the Golden Boot award as top scorer, but also the affection of numerous fans fans for taking a stand on issues like equal pay. One American fan, Emily Woody, said "I think she's so brave and I think she'll be looked back on as a hero."
Rapinoe also found support amongst her fans for her anti-Trump stance and her refusal to visit the White House, should the team get invited with one fan, Ritchie Prevost, saying that "Trump sucks, they can skip the White House."
