The protesters marched towards Times Square carrying banners and chanting slogans demanding justice for Wright.
"It's overwhelming that I have got to wake up and see that another young black man was murdered. I'm 25 years old, that man was 20 years old. Daunte Wright was 20 years old. He could have been my little brother," said a demonstrator.
According to local authorities, Wright was pulled over on Sunday afternoon but reentered the vehicle and continued driving, after which a police officer mistakenly fired at him instead of using a Taser.
Wright crashed his car a few blocks away and was later pronounced dead.
The police shooting took place about 10 miles (16 kilometres) from the spot where George Floyd was killed during an arrest in May last year.
