Thousands of demonstrators responded to a call by Albanian president Ilir Meta to join a protest against the left-wing government of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Meta accuses the cabinet of violating the constitution and links to organised crime.

"The domestic putschists and the international mafia organizations, which are trying to destroy your sovereignty and your constitution, should hear this. Article 2 of the Constitution, which you voted for on a referendum on November, 22, 1998, reads: the sovereignty in the Republic of Albania belongs only to the people," said Meta.

He signed a decree cancelling the swearing-in ceremony of the Constitutional Court judges appointed by parliament. Prime Minister Rama said Meta has no legal powers for such steps.

The opposition supporting Meta wants fresh elections to be announced to solve the political crisis as the country has been trying to impose reforms to launch membership talks on the EU membership.
