A weeklong heatwave in Cyprus saw temperatures hit 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) as health officials confirmed two deaths from heatstroke.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows people trying to deal with the high temperatures, sheltering inside cafes equipped with outdoor and cooling systems, and enjoying ice cream.

Ice Cream shop manager Kostas said people were spending hours in the air-conditioned cafes amid scorching heat.

"For June its comparably high temperatures, but the last day's humidity is also a thing. The atmosphere is very suffocating. Breathing Is hard. People walking in Ledras street, they have the need to sit somewhere and get refreshed, so we have people here sitting two or three hours, so they can spend the hard times of the heatwave during midday," he said.

Health officials reported on Sunday that a second elderly person had passed away from heatstroke. According to local media reports, at least three others were in serious condition. The Department of Meteorology issue a 'yellow' warning, calling on people to remain cautious in the extreme weather.
