Team USA made it to their fifth World Cup final after overcoming a spirited England side on Tuesday night.

Supporters watched nervously at a public viewing event in Chicago as the tournament holders crawled over the line.

Christian Press and Alex Morgan scored with headers either side of Ellen White's equaliser to put the USA 2-1 ahead after the first-half.

A spirited England recovered after the break with White's second goal ruled out for being marginally offside on a video assistant referee (VAR) review.

They had a golden chance to take the game to extra time after White went down in the area and her side were awarded a penalty by VAR in the 84th minute. England captain Steph Houghton however failed to convert - England's third penalty miss out of four in the tournament. Millie Bright was later sent off to compound a miserable night for the Lionesses.

The USA will now progress to their third consecutive final in a quest for a record fourth title when they face either Sweden or European champions the Netherlands on Sunday.

Those sides meet on Wednesday, with the losers playing in Sunday's third-place play-off.
