A jury in Oakland ordered Monsanto to pay an elderly couple over $2 billion (1.779 billion Euro) in damages on Monday, due to their weed killer 'Roundup' causing their cancer.

Alva and Alberta Pilliod, the plaintiffs who won the case, can be seen entering and exiting the courtroom with their lawyers.

"We're really glad about the verdict, we hope that Monsanto puts some label to warn people. I mean that was kind of our main intention in the first place, all of this money is really nice, but our health would have been better," Alberta said.

According to reports, the jury found that the company had failed to appropriately warn consumers that their product would cause cancer. The verdict was the third court case lost by the company in connection with their product Roundup causing cancer.

A verdict reached in a Californian court in August last year saw Monsanto being ordered to pay $289 million (€253 million) - which was later reduced to US$78.6 million (€69 million) - to a 46-year-old man who developed terminal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
