Christians and Muslims came together on Friday to break their fasts in Ouagadougou. This collective event, organised by young Burkinabe, aimed to foster harmony and understanding between the two religious communities amidst the country's challenging security situation.

Under the theme 'We are first Burkinabe before being Muslims or Christians,' individuals from diverse backgrounds joined in a shared meal, transcending religious divides in favour of national unity.

Dr. Abdallah Ouedraogo, a doctor and singer, hailed the initiative as a beacon of hope in troubled times. "Seeing all the religions come together in a pleasant setting to share a meal together and pray for peace is a laudable initiative," he remarked.

Journalist Antoine Yaogo echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the significance of breaking bread together in strengthening familial and communal bonds, especially in the face of the ongoing security crisis.

"Sitting down together and eating from the same plate is a strong bond," Yaogo noted. "An initiative like this will strengthen the ties between Muslims, Christians, and followers of traditional religions."

For many participants, this event represented more than just a shared meal; it symbolised a commitment to social cohesion and mutual respect.

Moumouni Koudougou, the initiator of the Christian-Muslim collective break, underscored the non-commercial and civic nature of the initiative, aimed at addressing negative experiences of coexistence.

"Christians and Muslims have sometimes behaved hastily...When we launched the initiative, these people didn't hesitate to come along," Koudougou explained.

This event marked the second edition of the collective break, signalling a growing commitment to interfaith dialogue and harmony in Burkina Faso.

As Christians observe Lent and Muslims fast during Ramadan, the gathering provides an opportunity for shared experiences and mutual understanding.
