People gathered for a candlelight vigil at the George Floyd Square one year after his death, in Minneapolis on Tuesday.

The vigil closed a day of celebration of Floyd's life and was held at the spot where he was killed.

On May 25, 2020, Floyd died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter following a three-week trial. Three other former officers are still awaiting trial in the case.
