Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Bangkok on Thursday, ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders’ summit on November 18-19.

Footage shows the two leaders shaking hands, and with their delegations at tables in a large meeting room. Xi and Kishida are seen speaking to each other without masks, while their mask-wearing officials listened to the discussions.

It was the first meeting between the leaders of the two countries in nearly three years and came amid heightened tensions in their region, over both Taiwan and ownership of the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Chinese media reported the Xi had told Kishida that they needed to resist 'conflict and confrontation', deepening mutual trust and co-operation.

At the APEC leaders summit, members states are set to discuss economic growth, post-pandemic links and tourism, and the green agenda.
