Elderly residents were filmed queuing outside a church in Palermo on Saturday to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

300 parishes throughout the region became temporary vaccination centres a day before Easter Sunday.

Nearly 6,000 people aged between 69 and 79 signed up for the initiative, agreed by the President of the Sicilian Region Nello Musumeci and the Sicilian Bishops' Conference.

"It is intended to be a sign of hope in these Easter days. The anguish we have over the pandemic," said

priest Filippo Sarullo.

The region launched the initiative in order to speed up the vaccination campaign.
