The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, denounced a moment of silence observed for the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi during a UN Security Council meeting in New York City on Monday.

"Wake up. Look at the world burning around you," he said. "This council, which has done nothing, nothing to advance the release of our [Hamas] hostages, commemorates the man responsible for their suffering. What's next? Will the council hold a moment of silence for Bin Laden? Will there be a vigil for Hitler? We wouldn't be surprised."

Erdan called Raisi a 'mass-murdering president' before claiming "the blood of thousands of innocent Iranians is on his hands."

"Raisi, as the Iranian people call him; 'The butcher of Tehran,' launched an unprecedented missile and drone strike on Israel to murder thousands of innocent Israelis, deliberately," he continued.

Last month, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel. The US, UK and Jordan all assisted in the shooting down the projectiles, with the IDF claiming '99 percent' had been intercepted.

The attack came as a response to the alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 - which Israel has not accepted responsibility for.

The Iranian president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others.
