Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin said the US should bear responsibility for its own actions, after Washington accused China of disrupting anti-drug co-operation, while speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.

"The US has been making negative and untrue remarks publicly… sanctioning Chinese companies on the grounds of fentanyl … misleading the public, blaming others, and shifting the blame for its own poor domestic drug abuse governance," he said.

Washington said China had taken "unacceptable" action on counternarcotics, after Beijing announced the suspension of ties on a range of issues, following US Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

"China will, as always, actively participate in international and multilateral anti-drug cooperation, and contribute Chinese wisdom and Chinese strength to global drug governance. We also sincerely hope that the US side can effectively resolve the fentanyl abuse crisis as soon as possible," the spokesperson continued.

China repeatedly warned that the US Speaker’s trip to Taipei would have severe consequences. As well as the breakdown in communication on a range of issues, it sanctioned Pelosi and her family, and carried out military exercises around Taiwan.

China regards the island as its territory under the 'One China policy,' while Taipei has never officially declared independence.
