Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Joanne Ou rejected the "one country, two systems" model proposed in Beijing‘s new white paper on the island, during a briefing in Taipei on Thursday.

"We reject 'one country, two systems'. Only Taiwan’s people can decide its future, and only the elected Taiwan government can represent the people of Taiwan internationally," the spokesperson said.

Ou stated that "the Chinese side is using Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan as an excuse to disrupt the status quo", calling on the international community "to continue to jointly condemn China's unilateral destruction of the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and a series of irrational military provocations".

The remarks came a day after China’s State Council published a white paper titled 'The Taiwan Question and China's Reunification in the New Era', opposing "external interference and separatism which will plunge Taiwan into the abyss and bring nothing but disaster to the island".

Beijing repeatedly warned the US of 'counter-measures' should US Speaker Pelosi’s visit go ahead, announcing a series of military drills around Taiwan. Following her trip to Taipei, China has sanctioned Pelosi and her family.

Taiwan has never officially declared independence from China. Beijing considers the island part of its territory.
