China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, has condemned US declarations that the country may invade Taiwan this year.

In a press conference held in Beijing on Friday, Wang said: "Taiwan issue is completely China's internal affairs, and no external forces can interfere. We firmly oppose the US's words and deeds manipulating Taiwan-related issues and provoking confrontation in the region".

The US Navy chief, Admiral Mike Gilday, stated last Thursday that China could invade Taiwan before 2024 to suppress the territory's independence movement.

China's statement comes as tensions have risen in recent days following Chinese President Xi Jinping's remarks that they do not rule out using force to resolve the conflict with Taiwan.
